Butterfly House Gift Tags / Small Hanging Decorations

A selection of the decorations hung on a piece of ivy wood.

These decorations are incredibly quick and simple to make and have so many uses. The most time consuming element is making the butterflies. Once you have these, the next step is deciding what you want to do with your decoration, so you make the right practical choices. For example, will it be single or double sided? Does it need a message section to write on? Does it need a hole to thread cord or string through? Possible uses include gift tags, Christmas tree decorations, place settings for a dinner table, labels for jars and bottles in your kitchen. You can do so much with this concept.

Once you know what you want to create, collect up a selection of materials and assemble as many as you need. They can all be very similar (e.g. all butterflies the same pattern) or each one quite different. Also, because they are so quick to make, they are practical if you need large quantities, for example as part of the theme for a wedding, a special birthday, or an anniversary party. If you are making really large amounts and are put off by hand making the butterflies you can always consider buying them in.

The decorations can also do double duty, which is something I try and think of to avoid things being thrown away after a single use. Most gift tags or place markers for dining tables will generally be discarded. These work really well as keep sakes. They might stay as they are, or have any written label removed. Either way they can become a decoration which is brought out year after year, perhaps for the Christmas tree, perhaps for an Easter celebration.

Here is a video showing how I assembled one of these decorations.
