Part of an old tree stump - probably ash or wllow - which has developed character over many years.

It offers strong contrasts in both colours and textures. One side is the original exterior of the tree and completely covered in its original moss. The other shows off the pale colours of the splintered wood, from when it naturally split into pieces as the stump was sawn off, near to the ground.

To me this stump brings to mind a mountain range. Lush and green on one side and bleak and unforgiving on the other. It even has a hole in the mossy side, which evokes thoughts of hidden caves.

You could take this tree stump in so many directions if you decide to craft with it. For example, going with the mountain concept, it could be the basis for a miniature, working on the bare wood side to bring out its rough, rocky quality and adding tiny details such as a lone tree clinging to the rock, or perhaps a mountain goat. Or, you might imagine a giant perched atop the craggy heights, his massive arms resting on his bent knees as he looks down on those living far below.

I had also considered using this tree stump as the base for a table decoration when demonstrating ideas based on The Butterfly House. I would have tucked air plants into some of the crevices, particularly on the side with the bare wood, using some larger upright plants, some tiny, curving plants and at least one which cascaded down over the wood’s surface. I would have finished the piece with a selection of paper butterflies.

Whatever your personal preference or inspiration, this piece has the potential create a unique and eye catching work of art.

The sawn base means this piece sits well on any level surface. The stump is dry, but like most of our older wood, because it has weathered outside for many years it is quite delicate and only suitable for indoor decorative purposes if it is to last. If you are happy for it to continue its natural ageing and gradually crumble away, as would happen in nature, then it should last a few more years outdoors and will once again provide a great home for tiny creatures.
